It’s hard to believe that this year’s Triple Crown season is already two thirds of the way done. The Kentucky Derby always brings about so much excitement in the world of horse racing and this year’s energy carried over straight through the Preakness.
When it came to planning an ensemble for these two races I knew that I wanted there to be a common thread between the two, but I wasn’t quite sure how I wanted to approach it. Enter DownEast basics. DownEast offers stylish options for ladies at a price point that is perfect for your bank account. Within moments of browsing the clothing selection at downeastbasics.com I found exactly what I was looking for to build two winning race day outfits that would compliment each other.

Board Meeting Dress, $44.99
I was initially drawn to the simplicity of DownEast’s style. Call me basic if you must, but I think there is nothing better than a classic cut and length on a dress. I think looking modest can be incredibly sexy, especially at the races.
This color of Egret is the perfect off shade of white and I love, love, love the navy blue trim around the neckline, capped sleeves, waist and hemline. That detail also lined the front zipper which added a bit of sass to the ensemble.
You may or may not have noticed that I have a thing for navy blue and white, so completing this look was super easy because roughly 45 percent of my wardrobe and accessories consist of these two colors. Since the Kentucky Derby is also known as the “Run for the Roses,” I added fresh roses onto my hat and also made a small rose boutonniere.
I wore a size XS in the Board Meeting Dress, and it fit comfortably. With my height of 5 foot 7, the cut of the dress came to the perfect length just covering the knee. This dress is ideal for the office, a luncheon, church, you name it. Did I mention this also comes in black? Say hello to your new next Belmont Stakes dress.

Hey Sailor! Navy Striped Skirt, $34.99
I was so excited for this skirt to arrive in the mail that when it came I immediately put it on over the outfit I was wearing. This skirt has a playful, child-like feel, doesn’t it? Something about it made me want to go twirl around in the park, which is exactly what I did.
I gave this stripe skirt a test run before Preakness weekend on my recent visit to Upstate New York and it is just perfect for springtime. I wore the XS small in this skirt and the fit was true to size. Any lady who’s worn one knows that pleated skirts are not the easiest to wear, but this circle cut design proves to look flattering on any body type.
The challenge for me with this skirt was finding a top that was a nice compliment, and I arrived with a simple red blouse that I tucked in to the skirt. The bold red automatically reminded me of the look I wore for the Kentucky Derby. Creating two looks that carried a theme through both race weekends was super easy with DownEast!
If you had these two items in your closet, what ways would you have styled them differently than mine?
