Merry Opening Day, Santa Anita!
Some get super excited about Christmas…whereas us horse lovers and players can’t wait to be reunited with the Great Race Place. Today is the first day of the 2016 racing meet which will go from now until the end of June. What better way ring in the “new year” than with some stakes races, a new dress for the Chandelier Room and some winning bets?
The Malibu Stakes is the featured race for today at Santa Anita Park. The $300,000 stakes boasts a field of seven, with 2015 Breeders’ Cup Sprint Winner Runhappy leading the pack. This should be one exciting race, and I can’t wait to see how Runhappy handles his first time on California dirt.
The Malibu Stakes
Race 8 – Gr. 1 – $300k purse – 7F – Dirt – 3yo & up
- #4 – Runhappy
- The Super Saver colt has has five consecutive wins and is out for his sixth. He first caught my attention in August at Saratoga when he won the King Bishop Stakes, and completely wowed the crowd in November’s Breeders’ Cup sprint. He’s known for his high Beyer speed figures and with Gary Stevens on the mount, this duo will be hard to beat.
- #7 – Lord Nelson
- This will be the first start for the Pulpit horse since May, when he came in fourth in the Pat Day Mile Stakes at Churchill Downs. Trainer Bob Baffert knows what he’s doing – there’s a reason he entered Lord Nelson. At 5-1 odds, he’s not one to leave out of your picks.
- #5 – El Kabeir
- El Kabeir could easily be looked over in this field, but I really like him. He’s had a number of successes in 2015 on the East Coast at Aqueduct in the Jerome & Gotham Stakes, and finished third in the Wood Memorial at Belmont. I love a horse that has 8-1 odds, especially when my favorite, Mike Smith is his jockey 🙂
$5 Trifecta – 4 with 5 ,7 with 5, 7 = $10
$4 Exacta – 4, 5, 7 with 5, 7 = $16
$3 WPS = 4, 7 = $18
